The development of practical methods for the preparation of chiral all-carbon benzylic stereocenters remains a significant challenge.  Although these structural moieties are commonly encountered in natural products and pharmaceutical compounds, their large-scale preparations often rely on racemic syntheses followed by separation of enantiomers. Accordingly, there is need for new, robust, enantioselective methods that are amenable to scale-up (i.e. do not require cryogenic reaction conditions, are cost-effective, highly selective and use low catalyst loadings). This presentation summarizes several asymmetric methods developed during the course of our process research program to provide practical access to all-carbon stereocenters including tertiary alkanes, 1,1-diarylalkanes and 1,1-arylalkynyl alkanes.
