Agricultural operations across the United States are encountering difficulties in complying with the current air pollution regulations for particulate matter (PM). Typically emission concentration measurements agricultural sources with exhaust stacks (point sources) are conducted in accordance with EPA's Method 201a. This method provides the protocols for determining PM2.5, PM10, and total particulate concentrations. Method 201a utilizes cyclones to separate out the particles larger than the size of interest. For example, the purpose of the PM10 cyclone is to remove the particles larger than 10 � so; particles of 10 � and smaller pass onto the next stage of the sampler. Laboratory tests and extensive field evaluations have been conducted to determine how well the Method 201a sizing cyclones work in agricultural environments where relatively large particles and fibers are present. The paper will summarize some of the key findings from this research.
