�2 receptor agonists are often used as feed additives in agriculture for their growth promotion effect. In December 2010, a novel �2 receptor agonist was found being added in swine forages as growth enhancement agent in Taiwan. The unknown �2 receptor agonist in swine forage was extracted with chloroform and 5% ammonium hydroxide solution. Its chemical structure was then elucidated by using NMR and ESIMS. After isolation and structural elucidation of the suspected additive from the market, the novel �2 receptor agonist was identified as buctopamine (4-(2-(tert-butylamino)-1-hydroxyethyl)phenol). Here, we report the identification and synthesis of buctopamine and mebuctopamine (4-(2-(tert-butylamino)-1-hydroxyethyl)-2-methoxyphenol) as authentic standards for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
