We demonstrated that both pH and organic buffer can significantly affect the catalytic nitrate reduction and byproduct selectivity. Higher nitrate removal was observed in organic buffer systems (MES (pH 6) and CHES (pH 10)) rather than those of inorganic buffer systems (phosphate and bicarbonate) due to the inhibition of nitrate contact on surface of catalyst by inorganic buffers. Nitrate removal decreased from 100 to 72% as solution pH increased from 6 to 10. Especially, significant inhibition on nitrate reduction (58%) was observed in solution pH 8 prepared with TRIS buffer due to leaching of Cu and Pd by hydroxyl-methyl and amino ligands in TRIS. The selectivity for nitrite increased as solution pH increased, while those for ammonium and nitrogen gas decreased.
