1, 10-Phenanthroline is a chelating ligand that has been used to prepare a large range of metal complexes. The properties of phenanthroline ligands can be tuned by modifying its substituents.   This can be synthetically challenging and methods for functionalizing phenanthroline can involve multiple steps, have low yields, and can be prone to poor selectivity. Thus, selective methods for functionalizing 1,10-phenanthroline directly are of interest. Herein, we report direct functionalization of 1,10-phenanthroline at the C3 and C8 positions utilizing Ir-catalyzed borylation chemistry.
