The pincer ligand class has garnered much attention due to its high thermal stability and bulky substituents. The proposed ligand is an analog of meta-terphenyl, which are neutral donors, but will replace the central binding carbon atom with a nitrogen atom which also creates a neutral ligand. The poster will discuss progress made toward the synthesis of a novel PNP pincer ligand. The synthesis began with a Suzuki coupling resulting in 2,6-bis-o-methoxyphenylpyridine, followed by demethylation promoted by pyridine HCl to give 2,6-bis-o-hydroxyphenylpyridine in good yield. Reaction with chlorodiphenylphosphine to give the final diphosphinite ligand has shown promising results and analysis of the product is on-going. The ligand will be coordinated to a variety of late transition metals and screened for catalytic activity. The determination of catalytic activity, thermal stability, and the geometry around the metal will be determined and compared to the meta-terphenyl class of ligands.
