4-tert-Octylphenol (4-t-OP) is one of the most widely used raw materials in industry. However, 4-t-OP has the potential for biological accumulation and adverse toxicity. In this study, a 4-t-OP degrading bacterium TW30, which was further identified as Acinetobacter sp., was isolated from sewage sludge. At the initial concentration of 5.0 mg/L, 99.03 % of 4-t-OP was biodegraded by the bacterium at 40 �C and pH 6.0 after 96 h. The biodegradation reaction was well described by the first-order kinetics model, with a half-life (t1/2) of 0.8 d. Degradation rate for 4-t-OP was enhanced by increased temperature, addition of Ca2+, Mn2+, NH4+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Na+, Zn2+, Cu2+, CH3COONa, and glucose as well as with decreasing initial 4-t-OP concentration. The main products as determined by GC-MS and HPLC were 4-isopropyltoluene, tert-butylbenzene and 4-acetylbenzoic acid. A tentative biodegradation pathway was proposed based on these degradation intermediates and products.
