Graphene as a building material for gas separation possesses one unique advantage: its one-atom-thin thickness. Membrane separations are advantages because they are pressure-based and hence more energy-efficient than the heat-based cryogenic distillation process. Using graphene a membrane will fully utilize graphene's one-atom-thin thickness, as a membrane's permeance is inversely proportional to its thickness. In this talk we will fully explore the many opportunities in gas separations as offered by porous graphene membrane from classical molecular dynamics simulations, including CO2/N2, CO2/CH4, and H2/CH4 separations. The other challenge for graphene as a building material is how to construct 3D porous structure from bottom up. Here we present ideas that could be useful to make 3D porous structures that have high surface areas and designer functional groups for gas adsorption.
