Considerable progress has been made in re-refining used oil since the days of  oily junkyard operations .Treatment  of used oil include provisions  for  corrosion  protection and fouling of equipment .Further operations deal with reductions of catalyst poisons , including proper operations of thin film evaporators to minimize entrainment .            Probably  the greatest progress has been made in applying  advanced hydrotreating technology , including use of sophisticated mathematical models that enable catalyst life prediction  as a function of all operating conditions  and a wide variety  of feed compositions that contain differing metals levels .Prediction  of product properties , hydrogen consumption  are calculated based on a kinetic model that enables evaluation of both hydrogenation as well as dehydrogenation for feedstocks ranging from jet fuel to Cat Feed hydrotreater boiling  range  . Most recently a re-refining operations has been designed for a feed containing  24 %  aromatics , 4000  ppm sulfur that had to be reduced to less than 10 %  aromatics  and less than 300  ppm to meet Group II specification .The plant has been built , came on stream and  met  Group II specification .            Economics  of re-refining are also addressed and indicate attractive rates of return for capacities of  more than  6 million gallons per year of feed .Internal rates of  return are presented for a 50 million gallon per year grassroots re-refinery for various  feed and product prices .
