Adsorption by means of using porous materials is considered to be promising approach. In this paper, nanoporous carbon prepared from waste rubber tires was examined for desulfurization at ambient conditions. Adsorptions of model fuel, which contains thiophene, benzothiophene (BT) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) over nanoporous carbon were conducted in batch and fixed-bed adsorption systems. Batch mode experiments were used to study the effects of contact time and adsorbent dose. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models were used to analyze the kinetic data, which were then well described by the pseudo-second-order model. The results indicate that the sorbents exhibited an efficient and economical way for removing sulfur compounds due to its low-energy consumption, ambient operation temperature and atmospheric pressure without using pressurized hydrogen gas; rather, there was a simple regeneration of the spent adsorbent.
