Saccharopolyspora (S.) spinosa is known to produce several spinosyn factors including spinosyns A and D as the major insecticidal components, which together are known as spinosad. Under some fermentation conditions, a structurally-different compound was produced in addition to spinosyns.  This metabolite was isolated and its chemical structure was elucidated. The new molecule was named spinactin and we hypothesized it to belong to a family of non-ribosomal peptide secondary metabolites which would be biosynthesized by non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS) in S. spinosa. The chemical structure of spinactin, as well as the identification and characterization of the spinactin biosynthetic gene cluster from S. spinosa will be discussed.
