Strong exchange coupling leading to unparalled blocking temperatures was observed recently in lanthanide single-molecule magnets bearing a N23- radical-bridge.1 This discovery underlined the promise of strongly-coupled lanthanide-radical systems for high magnetic blocking temperatures. In pursuit of even higher barrier blocking temperatures, we have canvassed a wide variety of radical-bridged dilanthanide systems by ac and dc magnetic susceptibility studies with SQUID magnetometry.2 Among others, we found that bipyrimidyl radical-bridges will engender strong exchange coupling in dilanthanide complexes and lead to single-molecule magnet behavior and magnetic blocking.2 Further, our analyses seek a deeper understanding of the origins of the strong exchange coupling and the magnetization reversal barriers, as would be elucidated by the study of systems with differing radicals.
