The metal-catalyzed reactions that are currently most used in chemical synthesis tend to rely upon 2nd- and 3rd-row transition metals. In recent years, concerns about cost and availability have fueled an interest in replacing these catalysts with 1st-row alternatives. Besides �replacing' more expensive metals, two features of 3d metals - increased number of accessible oxidation states and propensity for single-electron chemistry � have proven crucial in the development of cross-electrophile coupling reactions. We have shown nickel to be a versatile mediator of the selective cross-coupling of organic halides, enones, and carboxylic acid derivatives. Along with recent advances in reductive conjugate addition, allylic substitution, and ketone synthesis, this talk will discuss our current understanding of how nickel, mediates these transformations.
