The activation and functionalization of covalent bonds (e.g., H�H and C�H bonds) has been a key focus of the catalysis community. For example, hydrogenation reactions have been successfully developed on a large scale, and the conversion of fossil-derived hydrocarbons to oxygen- or nitrogen-functionalized compounds is central to commodity chemical processes, the agricultural sector, fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The addition of H�H and C�H bonds across M�X (X = OR, NR2) bonds of d6 and d8 complexes have recently been reported, and these stoichiometric reactions are of interest for possible catalytic cycles for hydrogenation or C�H functionalization. Rhodium(III) alkoxide complexes supported by bipyridyl ligands activate dihydrogen, and this chemistry will be presented.
