Metallacrowns (MCs) are metal complexes made with tetra-dentate ligands that cyclize to form a repeating [MNO]x sub-unit. They are named for their basic similarity to the classical crown ethers that have a repeating [CCO]x sub-unit. Like crown ethers, MCs can be synthesized with a range of sizes and the inward facing O-atoms are capable of binding a central metal ion. We have recently studied the three-component supramolecular assembly of MC complexes with transition metals (M2+), tetra-dentate hydroxamic acid ligands (L2-), and lanthanide ions (Ln3+). A range of MC complexes with centrally bound Ln3+ ions have been isolated with varying sizes and topologies. Due to the chemical flexibility and metal rich nature of this platform, MCs are currently being investigated for applications as luminescent optical probes and as magnetic materials. Topics including these applications and the discovery of new MC topologies will be discussed.
