Low-valent first-row transition metals can activate small-molecules. However, their limited redox capabilities make carrying out multi-electron transformations of small molecules difficult. One strategy is to tune the redox properties of the late metal by pairing it with an early transition metal to create a multiple metal-metal bond.  Previous work has been shown that chromium paired with a late first-row transition metal exhibit reactivity with small molecules such as carbon dioxide. Presently, vanadium has been used as the supporting metal choice to determine its interactions with late first-row transition metals.
