Arizona State University at the West campus (ASU West) and Glendale Community College (GCC) partnered to establish a strong foundational STEM educational pipeline program that seeks to improve the quality of student preparedness for industry and four-year degree programs.  By leveraging the convergence of instrumentation/technology with pedagogical changes, GCC students are being exposed to the University-level research environment and additional STEM career possibilities.  With support from NSF, GCC obtained and incorporated a 60MHz FT-NMR into the organic chemistry lab curriculum.  GCC students learn the fundamentals of NMR through the use of the 60 MHz NMR and then work with the research-grade 400 MHz NMR at ASU West.  While at ASU West, GCC students also characterize samples on a MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometer.  The second semester organic chemistry lab course culminates in a research symposium, in which students present their characterization findings in a poster session.  Preliminary assessment suggests that students have an increased awareness for the STEM fields, and several students who were previously focused on a healthcare career have refocused on a STEM research field.
