Project-based approaches to instruction have been shown to increase student engagement in laboratory courses, but may not be widely implemented due to the real or perceived constraints inherent to them.  A multi-week research module that requires students to propose and carry out the synthesis of a novel fluorous dye molecule by finding and adapting literature procedures will be described.  Particular attention will be paid to lessons learned in the development, implementation, and refinement process, with the goal of facilitating similar efforts at other institutions.  Preliminary assessment data on the impacts of the module will also be discussed.
