The objective of this research was to compare elutants for determining analgesics using TLC. The effectiveness of various 5 elutants, found on the internet, were tested using acetylsalicylic acid (asprin) and caffeine. Elutants having the most and least separation on the basis of Rf, were further investigated for use with a complete set of analgesic standards and commercial analgesics. Acetylsalicylic acid, acetaminophen, naproxen, ibuprofen, and caffeine, had different Rf values when chromatographed with chosen elutants. Next three commercial analgesics were chromatographed with the most and least effective elutants before and after filtering using a Teflon (PTEF) syringe filter. Filtering removed inert ingredients to determine if their presence affected the analgesics' Rf. From these results, it was concluded that the most effective elutant resulted in different Rf?values for all analgesics.
