The synthetic application and mechanistic insight into the recently developed Lewis acid promoted ketene-alkene [2 + 2] cycloaddition is presented. This newly developed method not only provides access to synthetically versatile cyclobutanone products that are difficult to access with current state-of-the-art reactions, but also provides insight into important mechanistic questions (increased reactivity, enhanced stereoselectivity, and altered reactivity).
