Repair of double stranded DNA breaks is initiated by E. coli RecBCD, a DNA helicase with two ATPase motors (RecB, a 3� to 5� translocase, and RecD, a 5� to 3� translocase).  We have examined the rates of DNA unwinding, single stranded DNA translocation and ATP hydrolysis of RecBCD as well as RecBC. Our approaches allow us to examine the coupling between the activities of the two motors, RecB and RecD and we will discuss a model for how ssDNA translocation is coupled to DNA unwinding.
