Copper is an essential element in biological systems and we are interested in the reactivity of copper amidinate complexes to advance our understanding of copper metalloenzymes.  We have targeted sulfur-based substrates for insertion to model blue copper proteins. The insertion and redox chemistry of M2(amid)2, M = Cu, Au; amid = (2,6-Me2C6H3N)2CH, with CS2 and PhNCS as well as Cu2(amid)2 with X2 (X = Cl, Br, I) will be discussed.  The later reactions will be compared to previously reported Au2(amid)2 chemistry.  Synthesis, spectroscopy, crystal structures, and DFT calculations will be shown to provide insight into the molecular and electronic structure of these new polymetallic complexes.
