Traditionally, organohalogen compounds, particularly decabromodiphenyl ether, have been used as readily-available, inexpensive and highly effective flame retardants for polymeric materials.  However, these compounds are persistent in the environment and may pose human health risks.  For this reason new environmentally-friendly flame retardants are being sought.  A trifunctional epoxide, TEPIC, may serve as a convenient base for the generation of new phosphorus flame retardants.  Treatment of the triepoxide with morpholine opens the epoxides to generate a triol.  Various phosphorus esters may be produced from the triol.  These compounds should have sufficient molecular weight to be non-migratory and display good flame retardant activity.
