The synthesis of air stable and aqueous soluble vanadium (IV) complex and its specific antibiotic activity against Gram-negative bacteria is reported. The complex has been synthesized by reacting dipicolinic acid (DPA) with ammonium vanadate NH4VO3salt and 2-methylsalysilate (2-MeSal) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The 2-MeSal is an oil water insoluble substance, but is absolutely water soluble in the vanadium (IV) complex.The new complex crystallizes as yellowish single crystals and further elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and x-rays measurements reveal that the vanadium atom is in a square pyramidal environment comprised by a square plane formed by three hydroxi-one-oxo groups, and the axial edge is occupied by the nitrogen atom of the DPA.Screenings have been carried out on Gram positive/negative bacteria with results suggesting that the complex is a specific antibiotic against Gram negative instead of Gram positive bacteria. Further preliminary antibacterial activity has being assessed against ten pathogenic bacteria species: A. bawmannii;C. freundii; S. typhimurium; S. marcenses; E. coli; E. aerogenes; E. cloacae; K. pneumoniae; P. aeruginosa; and P. vulgaris by the M�eller-Hinton agar method.Our preliminary screening shows that the complex among be absolutely aqueous soluble, possesses powerful antibiotic activity than that determinate by comparison with commercially Penicillin and Novobiocin antibiotics, respectively.
