Core/shell mesoporous Fe3O4@Au@mSiO2 microsphere was synthesized through a three-step procedure, including solvothermal step, in-situ reduction step and sol-gel step. HAuCl4 was adsorbed on the surface of the PAA modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles and then was in-situ reduced by NaBH4. The morphology and composition of the microspheres were characterized by SEM, HRTEM, XRD and ICP analysis. The reduction of the 4-nitrophenol was monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy. The obtained nanostructure exhibited high activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and facile magnetic recoverability. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of Fe3O4@Au@mSiO2 still remained nearly constant after several runs. The thermal properties of the nanoparticles were also studied by TG and DSC analysis.
