Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)  partners with the American Chemical Society (ACS) and local organizations such as Eli Lilly & Co., Dow AgroSciences, and the Indiana CTSI (Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute) to host the Project SEED Indianapolis program since 1973, tripling its outreach in the past 5 years. SEED pairs high school sophomores and juniors with scientific research mentors at IUPUI and industry partners for an 8 week summer exploration in STEM fields. The number of SEED participants now exceeds 600. SEED participants of the last 20 years were surveyed and 97% of respondents reported their college attendance and  nearly half had completed or plan to complete graduate or professional school. To further broaden the participation of underrepresented minority (URM) students in STEM majors at college levels, IUPUI became a partner with Purdue University at West Lafayette through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Indiana program that has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) since 2002. A decade later in 2012, IUPUI collaborated with Chicago State University to establish the Pilot Regional Center-the Louis Stokes Midwest Center of Excellence (LSMCE) in broadening the participation in STEM careers of URM students. LSMCE aims to further support the success of URM students at 28 other institutions in the six states of the Midwest. LSMCE is also funded by a five-year grant from NSF. Speakers will present programmatic themes and activities that have improved diversity and academic success of URM students in STEM, in addition to providing the platform to highlight success stories of these diversity initiatives.
