A person who conceives of a �new and useful art, process, machine, manufacture or composition of matter� or a �new and useful improvement in any art, process, machine, manufacture or composition of matter� has made an invention.  Such person can apply for and obtain a patent.  More often than not, such person has received the �help� of at least one other person during the course �making the invention.�  To what extent can such other person claim to be a co-inventor?  Having it right is important as incorrect inventorship may lead to the patent being declared invalid.  The state of the law in Canada on inventorship will be explored.  There will be a focus on inventorship issues in academia.
