Metal-Metal (MM) quadruply bonded species have been shown to be highly absorbing chromophores that exhibit long lived MLCT singlet states (10-20 ps) which could facilitate electron transfer in a bulk heterojunction solar cell. Incorporating secondary metals into the periphery of a MM multiply bonded complex could allow for a more complete coverage of the solar spectrum that might otherwise be inaccessible. The use of a ligand that is in itself highly light absorbing and tunable can lead to more control over next generation photon harvesting materials.The effects of incorporating metal-organic ligands into a MM quadruply bonded compound (where MM = Mo2 or W2) were investigated. The metal-organic ligand contained a transition metal (Re or Cr) carbonyl that could be monitored by fs-time resolved IR in order to elucidate the character of their photoexcited state as well as their lifetimes. The compounds were further characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, fs and ns-transient absorption, and X-Ray crystallography.
