Thiazyl radicals have proven to be good building blocks for a new family of paramagnetic ligands. A range of thermally stable, volatile metal-radical coordination complexes has previously been reported. Our current aim is to harness the inherent properties of thiazyl radicals, arising from the propensity for strong, directional electrostatic contacts and/or the propensity for reversible p-stacking dimerization, and use these to direct inter-molecular electronic and/or magnetic interactions in the solid state. Herein, we report recent results including an antiferromagnetically ordered metal-biradical complex, a series of lanthanide-radical complexes that exhibit unprecidented solid-state phase transitions observable magnetically and crystallographically, and a series of Dy(III)-radical complexes exhibiting single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior.
