a,�-unsaturated aldehyde formation is vital to a sustainable chemical economy as they are valuable products/intermediates in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine chemical sectors, e.g. cinnamaldehyde a food additive, for flavour and aroma, and also as insecticides. Silica supported platinum nanoparticles have shown exceptional activity, under mild conditions, for cinnamyl alcohol selective oxidation to carbonyl and carboxylic acid species. The influence of support physical properties on Pt catalyzed cinnamyl alcohol selective oxidation has been examined. SBA-15 and KIT-6 supports were chosen due to their substantial improvement in surface area with respect to commercial silica, but also demonstrate tunable pore structure and size whilst retaining both thermal and chemical intergrity. SBA-15 employs parallel 2-D non-interconnected, hexagonally close-packed channels (p6mm) and KIT-6 allows for interconnection of these channels within a 3-D network (Ia3d). Significant activity enhancements are made upon increasing surface area and furthermore through interconnecting mesopore architecture, postulated by increased product diffusion within the support structure. TOFs calculated based on both surface Pt and PtO concentrations reveal a strong indication that a surface oxide is the true active species.
