The chemistry of palladium nanoparticles coated with N-octylamine is examined. Specifically, the ligands are examined after being removed from the nanoparticles by hydrogen, heat, and ligand place exchange reactions, and comparing the results of these different methods. Initial results show that removal of the ligands by hydrogen results in four different forms of the ligand-nitrile, carboxylic acid, amine, and amide. The investigations are performed by GC-MS, NMR, and TGA. These studies are important in understanding the catalytic activity of hydrogen at the surface of palladium, and the chemistry of the attachment of the amine ligand to the palladium.
