Understanding surface reactivity has major economic implications as it applies to the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Reactivity of the underlying surface support also plays a crucial role in such catalysts. We are working to study applications of C-H bond activation resulting from the interaction of small alkanes and oxygen with solid supports, transition metal particles, and single-site catalysts under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Our experiments utilize several complementary analysis methods including a pulsed supersonic molecular beam, temperature programmed desorption (TPD), Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. New measurements into surface reactivity on metal supports and supported catalyst compounds will be presented.
