Previous work shows that Nitrotriazolone, 5-nitro-1,2-dihydro-1,2,4-triazol-3-one (NTO), and 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) were degrade under acidic conditions following pseudo-first-order kinetics in the presence of iron/copper particles.  This work addresses the reaction mechanism of the reduction of DNAN and NTO in an attempt to further improve the implementation of the technology on an industrial scale. Batch mechanistic studies were conducted using a galvanic metal cell system. The influence of the surface area of the bimetals, solution pH, mixing, copper/iron contact, and solid/liquid ratio on the reaction kinetics was addressed through a series of systematic studies. Decomposition of NTO and DNAN over time was followed by the HPLC determination and intermediates degradation products were identified using spectroscopic techniques. Surface area has a strong role in the decomposition for both, DNAN and NTO while pH strongly influences the decomposition of NTO as the non-dissociated form is one reacting with the Fe surface. Urea was identified as a probable degradation product.
