The increase in atmospheric CO2 that is linked to global warming is the result of an imbalance between CO2 absorption by nature and the rapid release of CO2 by anthropogenic activities. To reduce the amount of atmospheric CO2, the direct utilization of water for the reduction of CO2 would be one of most promising approaches for sustainable development in energy and environment.  In this paper, some recent advances in our researches on the dissociation of H2O for the reduction of CO2 by solar/renewable energy-driven two-step process are reviewed. The first reaction is the dissociation of H2O for the reduction of CO2 with metals as reductant, and the second reaction is to recycle the metal oxides into zero-valent metals with solar/renewable energy.
