Combining high-temperature CO2 adsorption with the water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction has several advantages over conventional integrated gasification combined cycle power plants, which presently uses solvent-based CO2 capture (e.g. SelexolTM): high-temperature sorption of CO2 in a sorption-enhanced water-gas-shift (SEWGS) process would eliminate the need for multiple catalytic WGS reactors and for a separate low-temperature CO2 capture unit and would avoid gas cooling and reheating steps prior to entering a gas turbine.Developing a cost-effective sorbent with a stable working capacity under WGS conditions has still remained a challenge. Sorbents that operate at relatively high temperature (i.e. CaO) are particularly attractive choices for pre-combustion scheme to integrate with water-gas-shift process. CaO, however, suffers from rapid degradation of capacity after multiple carbonation/calcination cycles.Here we report the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) synthesis and characterization of composite calcium oxide-based sorbents for carbon dioxide capture. USP is a continuous and industrially scalable method for synthesis of various oxide materials. Inert oxide binders such as MgO, Al2O3, SiO2, etc were incorporated in CaO matrix to enhance structural stability of the prepared CaO sorbents during multicycle testing of CO2 adsorption and desorption.  Synthesized sorbents were thoroughly studied via standard characterization methods in order to get an insight on their efficacy in extended multicycle operation. In addition, promising sorbents have undergone further testing under realistic WGS reaction conditions.
