Rapid temperature swing adsorption/desorption (RTSA) using polymeric supported amine/silica hollow fiber sorbents is a new post combustion CO2 capture technology that facilitates CO2 adsorption in hollow fiber sorbents under nearly isothermal conditions with improved energy efficiency via heat integration. The fast cycling time of the RTSA process offers the capability to handle large volumes of flue gas. In this work, the CO2 adsorption characteristics of a variety of polymeric supported amine hollow fiber adsorbents are evaluated in a benchscale RTSA system. Breakthrough and pseudo-equilibrium capacities for one amine sorbent type of ca. 0.6 mmol/g and 1.10 mmol/g are obtained, respectively, in dry mode without an external cooling agent. The CO2 capacity is anticipated to be substantially boosted by using cooling agent in the bores of hollow fiber sorbents to capture the heat of adsorption and maintain the fibers under isothermal conditions. The presence of water in the flue gas stream made the breakthrough and pseudo-equilibrium capacities increase by 76% and 45%, respectively.
