Over the past decade there has been an increase in the number of high resolution permanent magnet based NMR technologies, with a number of companies developing bench-top size instruments in the 42-60 MHz frequency range for 1H analysis. A robust and stable 60 MHz NMR instrument will be described featuring a single board digital spectrometer and fully shimmed 1.4 Tesla magnet with a wide bore that allows use of 3-10 mm NMR tubes, flow probes with 5-8 mm ID. The system has been developed to allow execution of chemometric and direct NMR measurement refinery applications performed in the laboratory and in online process control and optimization. The 1H NMR analysis of crude oils (TBP) , crude unit product streams (napthas, kerosene, LAGO, HAGO), vacuum tower products (HVGO, LVGO), FCC Unit feed and products (VGO, FCC gasoline, LCO, HCO), diesel and gasoline blending operations as well as hydrotreated streams have been developed and applied in the field. Applications of this NMR technology to residues, bitumen, tar sands, bunker fuels, shale oils, biodiesels and biomass conversion products have been demonstrated. NMR has advantages over optical and infrared spectroscopies due to the chemical specificity inherent to the NMR spectrum, the orthogonality of the organic functional groups observed, the linearity of the chemical information, and the fact that the opacity and color of the stream has no impact on the NMR spectral result.
