Polybenzoxazine films were formed via deposition of benzoxazine resin droplets onto substrate via lower critical solution temperature-induced destabilization. By using benzoxazine-based surfactant, a benzoxazine blend film was formed. Once polymerized, the film shows desirable properties of thermal resistance and mechanical toughness. However, transmission electron microscope indicates that phase separation is present within the sample. By comparing dimensions of phase-separated regions in the film to the dimensions of the resin droplets, the structure of resin droplets are shown not to be preserved once the polybenzoxazine film is annealed. Being a blend of two benzoxazine resins, the polymerization behavior is similar to the benzoxazine components as demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry. Hydrophilic segments-bearing, benzoxazine-based surfactant provided compliance while polybenzoxazine regions provided mechanical strength. With the film showing properties comparable to traditionally formed polybenzoxazine films, the novel lower critical solution temperature induced deposition technique is demonstrated to be an effective method for resin film formation.
