Polybenzoxazines have received mass research attention basing on their excellent properties. Like other high performance polymers, design and synthesis of polybenzoxazine-based nanocomposites are essentially attractive for the developments of high performance polymeric materials for specific applications. In this talk, a discussion on our recent work on the preparation, properties, and application of polybenzoxazine-based nanocomposites is delivered. Inorganic nanofillers including multiwalled carvon nanotubes, silica nanoparticles, POSS, magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and organic nanofibers have been used in the fabrication of nanocomposites. Functionalization on the nanofillers with benzoxazine compounds have been conducted for improvement of the interfacial compatibility between the polybenzoxazine matrix and the fillers. The nanocomposites have shown some attractive properties such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivities, magnetic characters, and ion conduction, and some application potential as constructive materials, microelectronic encapsulants, and proton conducting membranes for fuel cells. Polybenzoxazine-based nanocomposites with nanofillers certainly enhance the properties of polybenzoxazines and extend their application windows.
