Two series of graphene oxide (GO)/benzoxazine (BOZ) nanocomposites were prepared via in situ intercalative polymerization. The high-shear powder�powder mixing method of high energy ball milling and solution mixing method were used to blend BOZ crystalline powder and GO particles together before the polymerization, and to clarify their effects on the dispersion of GO and intermolecular interactions between the components. The effects of filler content on the chemical structure, curing behavior and thermal property of both series were investigated. In fact, GO is a good candidate for the preparation of benzoxazine based nanocomposites because of abundant oxygenated functional groups on the surface. It is easy for GO to form a good interfacial interactions with the BOZ matrix through hydrogen bonds or possible chemical bonds. Moreover, it is expected that carboxyl groups of GO may act as weak organic acid which accelerates the polymerization procedure of BOZ. To verify the effect of GO on the polymerization of BOZ, the purified BOZ monomer was used in the experiments to delete the catalytic influence of phenolic groups of dimers and oligomers. Based on Differential Scanning Calorimetry results of both series, BOZ with the addition of GO could not only decrease the cure temperature, but also increase the cure rate of BOZ. Interestingly, both nanocomposites with 1wt% GO occupied the least time to form polymer networks, attributing to the catalytic effect and good dispersion of GO. Therefore, the as-prepared GO/BOZ nanocomposites might have potential applications in many areas, such as aerospace, electronics, and packaging.
