Much attention has been directed toward solid electrolytes for the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) to overcome the most critical problem, that is the volatility and leakage of organic liquids used in it. However, the solidification usually spoils ionic conductivity and hence photovoltaic performance. In this work, we have successfully developed a novel solid electrolyte by three-dimensionally/regularly self-assembling hairy particles in a redox-ionic liquid, forming a continuous channel in nm scale with high ionic conductivity. The key to success was the role of the high-density, concentrated polymer brush surface-modified by living radical polymerization as well as the affinity of the brush component with ionic liquids.
