We report a set of solid electrochromic (EC) devices using 3-D nanoporous fluorinated tin oxides (FTO) as the electrode. The active EC material is ethyl 4, 4'-bipyridium chloride (viologen) and the electrolyte is ploymer-based electrolyte P(Vac-Ma)/PMMA-LiClO4. The 3-D nanoporous FTO electrode significantly reduce the device driving voltage down to 1.2V, in comparison to 2~3V for viologen-coated TiO2-based EC devices that use conventional 2-D flat FTO film as the electrode. The response time of our EC devices is measured to be less than 0.5 seconds, a remarkable enhancement in comparison to 2~3 seconds found in traditional viologen-cated TiO2-based EC using flat FTO glass as electrodes. The enhancements in driving voltage and response time are attributed to the enhanced FTO electrode-viologen-electrolyte interfaces that reduces the internal resistance and increases the electric field at the interface due to the use of 3-D nanoarchitectured FTO.
