Germanium nanowires (GeNWs) demonstrate a combination of unique fundamental properties such as size-dependent optical and electronic phenomena and valuable applied features such as high carrier mobilities. However, the interactions of this particular one-dimensional nanomaterial with the environment and with biological systems could lead to possible toxicity concerns. Systematic concentration data evaluating this cytotoxicity and its possible size dependence are needed. In this study, the synthesis of GeNWs was achieved using a thermal vapor deposition (TVD) method. The orientation and size of these GeNWs is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The cytotoxicity of such nanowires was evaluated by their exposure to human embryonic kidney fibroblast cells (HEK 293) and Michigan Cancer Foundation 7 cells (MCF 7) as a function of time, in conjunction with MTT and Trypan Blue Exclusion Assays. Interestingly, a time-dependent dissolution phenomenon for these crystalline Ge NWs in aqueous media was observed. To further clarify the mechanism of GeNW cell-dependent cytotoxicity, Western Blot and Caspase 3/7 Activation assays were also performed, with direct comparisons to drugs of known cytotoxic pathways.
