A family of iron complexes bearing a novel class of pincer-type, bis(imino)-N-heterocyclic carbene ligand have been synthesized and characterized. The presence of an N-heterocylic carbene (NHC) as the central donor in the ligand framework leads to unusual electronic and magnetic properties, which have been evaluated using x-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, magnetic susceptibility measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy,  M�ssbauer spectroscopy, and computational techniques. Application of these complexes to catalytic processes highlights the unique features of this class of compounds.
