This presentation will illustrate how the general parameters for the efficient dye sensitization of semiconductors are far broader and offer far more opportunity than those currently controlling the performance of dye sensitized solar cells. It will begin with a discussion of the electron transfer from excited dyes to semiconductor electrodes that occurs at high yield over a wide range of time scales, from microseconds to femtoseconds, depending upon the structure of the dye layer and its environment, as well as on the relevant energetics of the dye and the underlying solid. Experimental results on heterogeneous electron transfer in the picosecond time frame will be presented. Model silver halide systems will be featured to illustrate these points. With consideration of these many roles, new design regimes for dye-sensitized solar cells can be constructed that can increase their efficiency.
