Twelve Plantago species including twenty-eight samples were investigated for their phytochemical composition, anti-inflammatory and cellular antioxidant activities. Thirty compounds were tentatively identified by UPLC/Q-TOF-MS. Geniposidic acid and acteoside were quantified with a newly developed UPLC-UV method. The investigated Plantago samples significantly differed on the concentrations of geniposidic acid and acteoside, as well as their phytochemical composition. In addition, the extracts of Plantago samples showed significantly different anti-inflammatory properties on LPS induced RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cells and cellular antioxidant activities on HepG2 cells. The study assessed the first insight into the cellular antioxidant activity of Plantago species including four unreported species (P. arachnoidea, P. depressa subsp., P. jehohlensis, P. himalaica). It may provide valuable information for the potential application in functional foods, commercial production and consumption of genus Plantago.
