Cyclodextrins (CDs) are glucopyranose-based macrocycles linked together through a(1,4)-glycosidic linkages. These cone-shaped molecules have all primary hydroxyl groups arranged at the narrower end and all secondary hydroxyl groups arranged arranged at the wider end of the molecules. Using CD scaffolds to synthesize mesogens is an appealing approach in making new materials because of the unique geometry that CDs;additionally, the ability of CD hosts to form inclusion complexes with organic compounds offers another dimension of tunability. Ling et al[1] synthesized a class of CD derivatives bearing thioalkyl groups at the primary face of �-CD and have shown that this class of molecules self-assembles to form thermotropic LC phases.  Here we wish to report our new progress towards the synthesis of novel functionalized CD derivatives and our preliminary results about their self-assembling properties.Reference[1] C.-C. Ling, R.
