A portable hand-held reader was developed for real-time monitoring of colorimetric sensor array (CSA) response to gaseous analytes. The device is small (approximately 6'x3.5'x1.5' - roughly 2.5x the total volume of modern cellular phones) and light (approximately 1 kg). It includes a linear contact image sensor (scan rate 10-30/sec) and micropump (flow up to 1.5 SLPM) and is designed to be used with linear CSAs printed on glass slides. Two-dimensional CSAs have proven to be useful in analyzing many classes of gaseous analytes including food aromas, explosive residues, and toxic industrial chemicals; linear CSAs show improvement over two-dimensional CSAs due to decreased response time, more uniform response, and significantly increased scan rate. The device with linear CSAs shows strong potential for use as a portable, inexpensive real-time monitoring tool.
