Magnetic nanoparticles can serve as magnetic relaxation switches (MRS) when they react with target analytes and switch between their dispersed and aggregated states resulting in changes in relaxation time of their surrounding water protons. In addition, magnetic changes are detectable for any analyte in a variety of dirty, opaque samples. MRS technology can be used to detect enzymes, ions, nucleic acids, proteins, small molecules, viruses and cells in solutions such as water, serum, cell lysate, plasma, urine, and blood. Without sample preparation and washing steps, MRS biosensors may become widely used in biomedical area in the future. Magnetic nanoparticles are good hostile for encapturing small molecules besides of their high water dispersibility and ease of surface functionalization for further bioconjugation to allow recognizing specific molecular targets. Here we will describe a new approach of paramagnetic nanoparticles which are conjugated to DNA. Current results of relaxivity changes depend on target-analyte interaction will be described along with further directions, including analysis in real samples.
