The �classical� forms of chromatography and electrophoresis originated from the needs of biochemistry research and totally outside of analytical chemistry. The landmark publications by James and Martin on GLC during the early 1950s start historically the �analytical era� of separation science in which sensitive detection and quantification were explicitly recognized. The coincidental inventions of capillary columns, ionization detectors and the first GC/MS combination set in the motion revolutionary changes in which the U.S. instrument companies played primary role. However, still in the early 1970s, relatively few academic institutions recognized the value of analytical separation science. The subsequent developments of HPLC, capillary LC, supercritical fluid chromatography, isotachophoresis and capillary zone electrophoresis have changed the perceptions profoundly. While these developments largely originated in academic laboratories, their commercialization and industrial uses have been essential to further progress. The sophistication of instrumental designs and the power of miniaturized and microfabricated separation devices are currently reflected in some of the most exciting areas of scientific endeavor: the Human Genome Project; environmental and food analysis; the uses of �omics technologies� in biology and medicine; multicomponent analysis of single biological cells, among others. The university laboratories continue to generate additional ideas and train future leaders in analytical separation science.
